It's produced whe friction between tiny water ------- and little ice particles in clouds, ------- -------- generated static electricity. The scientists don't know why the smaller particles pick up positive charge and the largue-- particles pick up a negative charge. The particles acomulated at the botton. when the massive potencial difference measured in millions of volts, this electrical potencial create a powerful electric field which stretches from the bottom of the cloud to the ground.
